June 2nd weekend edition of our “Top 20 +” e-discovery compendium. SPOTLIGHT: the e-discovery lessons of “Downton Abbey”

Our weekend edition of the “Top 20 … plus more” … a snapshot of some interesting e-discovery blog/web site posts, vendor news/views on a wide range of electronic discovery related issues, and other tech developments from the past week.    It is compiled by Master Sensei Social Media Guru Rob Robinson who is Vice President of Marketing for Orange Legal Technologies, a company that is a long-time member and sponsor of The Posse List and The Electronic Discovery Reading Room.

Rob compiles the information from online public domain resources and highlights key electronic discovery related stories, developments, and announcements.  This is supplemented by the editorial staff of The Electronic Discovery Reading Room.

This week’s spotlight:  the e-discovery lessons of  “Downton Abbey”

The Masterpiece Classic popular period drama “Downton Abbey” has been all the rage in the U.S.  It drew 5.4 million viewers for the finale of its second season on PBS, a record for PBS.   When all is said and done, most of the characters are pretty one-dimensional.  Thomas and O’Brien are always bad.  Anna and Bates are always good.  Yes, I know: Bates is in prison for the death of his wife. But is there any doubt that season 3 will bring a new development which will exonerate him?  The only character who exhibits a bit of depth is the dowager countess brilliantly played by Maggie Smith.  But, alas, she dies in season 3.  Maggie’s request to be “taken out”.   She asked to be written out so she can return to her stage work.

The show covers a lot of change:  cultural and social change (i.e.  the erosion of the class structure in Britain), historical change (i.e., World War I, the Spanish influenza epidemic) and technological change  (i.e., electrification, the arrival of the telephone).

Erin Nealy Cox of Stroz Friedberg wrote an interesting piece this past April (we missed it first time around) discussing the failure of lawyers to adapt to the technological revolution as, for example, resisting taking a direct role in e-discovery … facing the same challenges and fate as Downton’s patriarch, Robert Crawley, the Lord of Grantham, who is stuck firmly in the Victorian era even while the world around him is changing irrevocably.  For the full piece click here.

And now the past week’s news and views:
